VANCOUVER – The recipients of the second annual British Columbia Aboriginal Business Awards were announced today by Premier Gordon Campbell and Keith Mitchell, chair of the BC Achievement Foundation. The recipients will be honoured at a gala celebration on Dec. 1, 2010 in Vancouver.

“Congratulations to each of the 18 businesses honoured in the second annual awards,” said Premier Campbell. “The businesses selected reflect the remarkable cross-section of enterprise and industry within British Columbia’s Aboriginal business sector.”

The BC Aboriginal Business Awards were launched in October 2008 to honour and celebrate business excellence. Seven award recipients, one from each category, were selected in the 2010 awards. In addition, a further group of eleven Aboriginal businesses were noted for their outstanding achievement. An independent jury panel evaluated the submissions based on the viability, sustainability and competitiveness of the business.

“The jury had an extremely difficult task selecting the recipients from the many remarkable businesses nominated in this year’s submissions,” said Mitchell. “The BC Achievement Foundation extends its appreciation to the jury members, Tim Low, entrepreneur, past economic development officer and currently director of citizen services, Service Canada; Chief Michael LeBourdais, Whispering Pines/Clinton Indian Band and Ruth Williams, CEO, All Nations Trust Company, for their thoughtful deliberations.”

“This year’s Aboriginal Business Award recipients represent the growing number of outstanding Aboriginal business leaders in British Columbia,” said Barry Penner, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation. “These role models will encourage the next generation of Aboriginal people to bring their entrepreneurial ideas to life.”

The BC Aboriginal Business Awards are presented by the BC Achievement Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, and generously supported by New Relationship Trust, BC Hydro, Teck, and Encana.

How it all began.....2004

It was July 2005 and like every year, working in the local school district, we would get laid off for the summer. So I decided that I wanted to make more dollars, and spent my payday on equipment and supplies to make bannock at the Westside Daze. My good friend Mike Abel, offered the concession at Vista Ridge Carwash to use for a bannock stand. What a great idea. We were there for over 2 years. Mike Abel, that's the kind of guy that he is. Mr. Wonderful. Thanks Mike for your support at the carwash.

Back in 2004, Geoff Greenwell assisted with our business plan, he did a lot of work and very supportive when we were trying to get our business off the ground. In 2008 he asked us if we wanted to open a concession in Winfield. We were able to take on that contract in Lake Country and started a small business out there. It was exciting to learn how to serve 100 people at a time. Thanks so much Geoff.

Thank you Donald Hannah! He was our push n pull with our project from day one. He took my business plan and ran with it. The most rock solid plan that we live by day after day. Eric Murray of Indian Northern Affairs also believed in this project along with Gail Joe of ANTCO. They pushed hard for this project and believed that we would have a successful business. Thank you so much for your support.

On July3rd we started painting the ceiling, we wasted no time, as soon as we got possession, we were in here 18 hours a day the summer of 2009, building everything from the ground up. My brother, Warren Bond was the biggest help in this project. He built the walls and helped drywall. I thank him from the bottom of my heart! He definitely has the biggest heart and hard-working man!!

We have lots of friends who helped along the way with our project. Ron & Debbie Kushneryk, who helped with the interior decorating, building the coffee bar and condiment stand. Shawn Lind, Ryan Hill and Casey for their drywall expertise. Bruce Frankel for prepping and painting the floors. Cherry Rose, Peter & Wanda Janzen for putting together furniture from IKEA. Amanda-lynn Downing for her support and spending her days helping with IKEA products "starrrt the car"!! Wayne Jack for helping with the sanding and many trips to Home Depot. THere was NOT one day that went by last summer, that we did NOT go to Home Depot. We were there every single day sometimes at least 2-10 times a day!!! Without their help and support day after day last summer, we would probably still be building our cafe!

One day back in 2005, we met a guy named Stewart. He would come by the carwash almost every day and order a buffalo burger and eventually one our Extreme Toffee Coffee Frappes. He became a very good friend, and helped so much with his computer knowledge and expertise! He built our computer system from the ground up. No one has this system, no one could come close to this cafe system and how easy it is to use. He worked relentless hours day in and day out helping us with this prototype cafe computer system. Stewart is definitely one tech savvy dude!! Thanks so much Stewart for your support and still to this day, we thank you from the bottom of our heart. ~ Sharon & Darren~

My dad passed away July 1, 2008 on the night of the Westbank fire works. It was a very traumatizing night for all of us. My dad would come visit us when we were at the car wash every day.

Every day he would tell us that we need to get a bigger place. I would say "Yes Dad, someday" we will.

He would sit in the lil kitchen and visit Darren and drink a pop and look out the window at everyone washing their cars. It was the same conversation everyday for years. He had a heart attack the night of July 1st, 2008 and sadly he didn't make it

My goal was to make sure that we had a bigger place for him. On July 1, 2009 we took possession of 505-3041 Louie Drive at Governors Landing. I know he watches over us and would be so proud to come to our cafe and sit back and watch everything that goes on.
